Deadline has broken the news that two of ‘The Flash’ original stars are leaving the CW series: Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh are both officially leaving the show after Season 7.
Cavanagh who played various incarnations of the scientist Dr. Harrison Wells, in 146 episodes, was originally planning to terminate his role at the end of Season 6, then came the pandemic shutdown, Cavanagh hung around to complete those storylines in the first three episodes of Season 7.
Carlos Valdes, who has appeared in all 151 episodes, will end his tenure as a series regular with the Season 7 finale. Beginning the show as Francisco “Cisco” Ramon, the tech wizard at S.T.A.R. Labs, who helps create and maintain Barry Allen’s super-suit as the Flash, he transformed into the superhero persona of Vibe (and, later, Mecha-Vibe).
In a statement, executive producer and showrunner Eric Wallace said he is “keeping the door open” for both actors to return as guest stars.
“Tom and Carlos have been an integral part of our show for seven seasons, and will be greatly missed,” Wallace said. “Both are incredible talents who created beloved characters that fans and audiences around the world have come to love. Which is why we are happily keeping the door open for return appearances.”
With Valdes and Cavanagh’s departure, “The Flash” core original cast remains Grant Gustin as Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow and Jesse L. Martin as Iris’ father Joe West.
The Flash made his comic book debut in January 1940 in Flash Comics #1. Originally he was a research scientist by the name of Jay Garrick who developed his speed capabilities by inhaling radioactive vapours. The second incarnation, Barry Allen, was introduced in October 1956 in Showcase #4. As we know from the current series, Allen gained his powers from a lightning strike.
